This dive begins at the line of buoys that mark the beach swimming area. Once descended to the sand at about 20m, you will see the edge of the reef and follow it till you reach about 25m of depth.

Watch your no decompression time carefully– as these divesites make it easy to go down to 30 or 35m, but as we want to spend more time diving, we try to stay at the 25 m mark for the majority of the dive.

You will find a canyon-esque rock formation, which is home to many different fishes like groupers, trumpet fish and of course all the colourful fish of the Atlantic Ocean like damsels, wrasses, breams etc.
Keep your eyes on the reef wall to find sponges, nudibranchs, crabs etc. but never forget to check the waters above you for big shoals of sardines, as well as the sand areas in the deeper bits for rays and angelsharks.
If the conditions are right this dive is easily combined with the likes of Waikiki and La Pared since you´ll just drift along the whole of Playa Grande waiting for the boat captain to pick you up 😊.

As for all the divesites in front of the Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, all divers are supposed to have a buoy with them. The guide uses his to have a guideline for the safety stop which is usually done in midwater. And of course, it is important that the boat can easily spot the divers after their safe return to the surface.

Waikiki

Waikiki is one of our boat dives in front of the Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen. It´s just next to Richies Place. The boat drops you off at the shot line and the dive begins with a descent down to 15 – 20 m.

While descending you will already see the lava tongues emerging from the sand. They will guide you down to the edge of the reef, which is at about 20m. Dive along the reef and find massive groupers, big shoals of sardines hanging out just above the reef who are usually accompanied by barracudas or even amberjacks. Flounders and trumpet fish are common fish at Waikiki.

There are also large caverns to explore. They are home to orange corals and sea fans. Of course, there are loads of sponges, crabs, and other marine life to find at the reef wall. It is a great spot for photographers as well, as you can do stunning photos of divers gliding along the reef.

As the current can be strong in this area, every diver should have a buoy with him. In case there is a bit of a drift, we simply use the current and glide along the reef. The boat will pick us up wherever we ascent.
We need to watch our no deco limit at this reef, as we usually run out of that earlier than of air. Therefore, we need to ascent early enough to have time left for a safety stop and to shoot the buoy, which the guide will always do as the boat is somewhere above us.

Charco natural - North of Lanzarote

Charco natural is located near the small village of Mala in the North East of Lanzarote. With a sort of natural amphitheatre, which serves as the entry and exit point. A small fork connects the basin to the open sea.
For our more intrepid divers, there is a rock plateau on the right hand side of the basin, where it’s possible to enter the ocean with a giant stride.

Underwater there is a vegetation-covered plateau and a very impressive lava landscape which is especially good for spotting small animals like nudibranchs, octopus and crabs. But quite often sardine shoals or rays escort the divers on their excursion.
The journey goes over the plateau in 20 meters depth to a fork where the divers can go to the left and follow the reef up to a depth about 35 meters, or go along a rock plateau back into the sun.

Another possibility leads back 25m over bizarre rocks to a small grotto at 12-8 meters.
On the way back to the algae-covered plateau it’s possible to see scorpion fish, barracuda and big schools of yellow bream. The exit takes place either over the natural basin or –with a bit of work- over the rocks if the tide has dropped.

Charco Natural is a beautiful dive for the more advanced divers who like to enjoy the variaties of Mala.

El Emisario in Playa Blanca

El Emisario is a divesite in Playa Blanca in the south of Lanzarote. There are 2 extensive tubes that make orientation very easy and mark entry and exit. The dive guides you along a massive lava tongue down to max. 18m. This lava formation is used as a haven for many species that represents the fauna of the Canaries.

This divesite in Playa Blanca is popular with a variety of species of rays and angel sharks. Pay particular attention to the many overhangs and crevices which often play host to beautiful anemones, cleaner shrimp, moray eels and slipper lobster. At the end of the rock is a small cliff, where you can find dusky grouper, moray eel, island grouper and the majority of the collective sea life in the Canaries. The contrast between the rock and the sand allows you to see species from both environments at a depth less than 20 meters!

Playa Coloradas
Las Coloradas looks like a long bridge (puente) across the sea bed that lies at around 16 meters depth.

From the dropping point, you can dive in either direction, keeping the ´wall´ on either your left or right side. The topography of the rock formations were sculpted by the lava flows that were once dominant on the island, making it a really popular place for morays and shrimps to hideout!

There are marvelous anemones and a break through as well, which gives you great opportunities for pictures.

Being quite a shallow boat dive with a maximum of only 18m, makes Las Coloradas an excellent dive for both experienced divers and beginners.
