This dive spot is composed of a few modest wrecks all within 50m of each other. They are located just off the harbour wall in Puerto del Carmen. Here you may find yourself in this breathtaking ship cemetery – depth ranging between 16 to 40m.

In addition to the lasting impressions left by the shipwrecks there is also a chance to witness huge swarms of sardines and barracudas. Furthermore there are larger species including angel sharks and black stingrays. With a bit of luck you can also look out for trumpet fish, crabs, cuttle fish and other rock residents that inhabit the surrounding area.

The divesite Harbour Wall Wrecks in Puerto del Carmen is a fascinating divesite, even if you prefer your dives to be a little challenging, you will be well satisfied after this dive.

Harbour Wall Wrecks
On top of the reef, there is a plateau, where there is a well preserved wreck at about 18m lying on its side. The special thing about this wreck, is that the harbour wall was built around it, meaning it literally protrudes from the wall itself!

The deeper wrecks are fascinating too, as you can clearly see how nature finds her way to grow new life on foreign objects. Big schools of sardines around the broken wrecks make this dive special.

Black Beach Puerto del Carmen

The divesite Black Beach is named after the tiny little black beach on the corner of the old harbor in Puerto del Carmen. It also goes by the name of “Casa Chucho – House of the rays”, because the area is home to rays of all shapes and sizes – so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

There’s a small rock wall to step down onto the shingle beach, but the guides are always there ready to lend a hand. The site offers a mixture of beautiful overhangs and unearthly rock structures for the divers to explore.

Following the harbour wall takes us steadily down to the end of the reef at about 39m. There is some beautiful topography and it is possible to see large groupers who almost seem to pose for the camera.

This is a fantastic divesite for open water and advanced divers alike. There is much to see and explore in the shallower depth: Angel Sharks, Rays, Sea Hares, Cuttlefish and Octopus to name but a few.

Black Beach also offers an alternative route to the Blue Hole swim through, with a beautiful wall, many over hangs and a small shrimp cave to explore on the way.

When the tides and currents are favourable, this entry point also allows for a lazy drift dive along the wall, exiting at Playa Chica.

La Pared

La Pared is spanish for “the wall“. This name alludes to the mesmerizing reef wall that you will explore throughout the dive.

After a 20m open water descent you arrive directly at the reef wall and can choose which way to go. Ideally you’ll simply follow the fish, that you will find in dozens. Either way, you will get the feeling the dive is just too short: yellow encrusted anemones, yellow sea fan, orange corals and loads of sponges and marine life in every nook and cranny.

There are 20m of water above you and 15-20m underneath you and gliding along the reef wall you get the feeling that you are truly flying underwater. A great sensation that only a reefwall can offer. A few embayments and overhangs offer the diver loads of objects for great and impressive pictures.
There is also a good chance to spot some big sting rays or angelsharks.

Once you leave the depth to avoid running into deco, you will find a little reef at about 12 metres deep which gives you time to take some pictures of crabs, nudibranchs etc and enjoy the rest of the time until you ascend to do your safety stop.

The guide always shoots the buoy to make sure you are seen by the boats. While doing the safety stop in midwater, just look down. At this spot you usually can see the shoals of fish at the edge of the reef, or a ray on the sand area.

Fariones

Situated between Playa Grande and Playa Chica, you will find the Veril de Fariones. This underwater cliff stands out as a dive site because of its depth and height of its walls.
You can access the dive site by the beach front of Playa Grande or surface swimming out from Fariones beach. As it is a bit of a walk either way, you should be fit to carry your equipment a few metres.
Once in the water however, you will realize it is worth the effort. This dive site offers many different routes that you can explore.
It is a good dive site if you want to float neutrally buoyant along a high reef wall, and if you want to do a couple of deep dives for instance in a course. Everything and anything can be seen along these cliffs, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled!
The shallow waters around the pier of Fariones also makes for a perfect safety stop area, with plenty of small rocks to forage around whilst you wait, it is a nice end to a beautiful dive!

The Eye
The Eye is a 3m by 2,5m hole in the reef wall of the Fariones reef. It looks like an eye, which is obviously where its name comes from. You can dive through the eye as it is big enough for divers including tanks.
The eye is in a depth of 40m, so this route is only suitable for the more experienced divers.

This dive begins at the line of buoys that mark the beach swimming area. Once descended to the sand at about 20m, you will see the edge of the reef and follow it till you reach about 25m of depth.

Watch your no decompression time carefully– as these divesites make it easy to go down to 30 or 35m, but as we want to spend more time diving, we try to stay at the 25 m mark for the majority of the dive.

You will find a canyon-esque rock formation, which is home to many different fishes like groupers, trumpet fish and of course all the colourful fish of the Atlantic Ocean like damsels, wrasses, breams etc.
Keep your eyes on the reef wall to find sponges, nudibranchs, crabs etc. but never forget to check the waters above you for big shoals of sardines, as well as the sand areas in the deeper bits for rays and angelsharks.
If the conditions are right this dive is easily combined with the likes of Waikiki and La Pared since you´ll just drift along the whole of Playa Grande waiting for the boat captain to pick you up 😊.

As for all the divesites in front of the Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, all divers are supposed to have a buoy with them. The guide uses his to have a guideline for the safety stop which is usually done in midwater. And of course, it is important that the boat can easily spot the divers after their safe return to the surface.
